The United States Department of State has announced the launch of a premium expedited service for B1/B2 visa applicants, allowing travelers to pay an additional $750 to secure interview appointments within 10 business days.
According to a notice published in the Federal Register on June 9, the initiative will operate as a pilot program from July 1 to December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension.
The service will be available only at select embassies and consulates, though the department has not yet disclosed which posts will participate.
The expedited option is designed to reduce the lengthy wait times that have become a major challenge for applicants, particularly in Africa.
In Abuja, for example, the average wait time for a B1/B2 interview currently stands at 11.5 months. While the standard visa fee remains $185, the premium processing charge is a separate, optional add-on.
Importantly, payment of the fee guarantees only faster access to an interview slot and does not ensure visa approval. This development
This development comes against the backdrop of restrictive measures introduced under the Trump administration, including requirements for certain African nationals to post bonds of up to $15,000 as part of their visa applications.
African countries also account for the largest share of nations under partial US travel suspensions, further complicating access for prospective travelers.
Observers note that the premium service could ease some of these hurdles, particularly for applicants with urgent business or personal travel needs.
However, concerns remain about affordability and equity, as the additional cost may place the expedited option beyond the reach of many applicants.
