Fresh security concerns have surfaced in parts of eastern Sokoto State following intelligence reports alleging that fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, are conducting weapons training and tactical exercises along the Sokoto–Zamfara border corridor.

According to findings released by Basharu Altine, State Coordinator of the Movement for Social Justice and Good Governance, the exercises are reportedly taking place in communities stretching from Bingabale Kudu through Bafarawa East to Bargaja. Fighters linked to Turji are said to be undergoing military-style drills with newly acquired arms.

Altine alleged that key associates of Turji—including Illa Manawa and Dodo, believed to be Turji’s younger brother—are actively involved in the training. He further claimed that intelligence suggests the introduction of sophisticated weapons into the area, similar to those used in recent clashes with security forces.

“Our findings indicate that Turji’s fighters are receiving training on advanced weapons systems, with newly recruited operatives providing tactical expertise,” Altine stated.

Intelligence Findings

  • Reports suggest the arrival of a fresh consignment of weapons and newly recruited fighters, some with links to insurgent groups.
  • Sources indicate that the group has allegedly acquired night-vision devices, now integrated into their camps.
  • Two suspected commanders, Haru Dole and Ibrahim Chimo, have been linked to the procurement and movement of these arms.
  • Preliminary intelligence points to a growing alliance between Chimo and Turji, potentially expanding the group’s operational capacity.

Altine warned that the alleged collaboration could have far-reaching implications for communities in eastern Sokoto. Intelligence sources reportedly fear that coordinated attacks may be planned against local government headquarters before the peak of the rainy season.

Call for Action

The security advocate urged authorities to intensify surveillance and adopt proactive measures to verify the intelligence and prevent potential threats to lives and property.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. The claims contained in the intelligence report remain unverified.
