The Executive Chairman of Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Rasaq Akorede Olojede, on Tuesday paid a compassionate visit to survivors of the Alakija building collapse who are currently receiving medical care at the hospital. His presence was aimed at offering moral support and reassurance to the victims as they continue their recovery journey.
Earlier, Hon. Olojede had visited the site of the collapsed structure, where he sympathized with bereaved families and residents affected by the tragedy. He pledged to work closely with the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to strengthen safety measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The tragic event occurred on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at approximately 11:40 a.m., when a three-storey building in Alakija, Oriade LCDA, suddenly gave way. The collapse claimed at least nine lives, while 27 individuals were rescued alive. Eyewitnesses and residents, however, suggested that more victims might still be trapped beneath the rubble.
The ill-fated building, reportedly over 45 years old, housed multiple businesses, including a cybercafé, cold room, business centres, retail shops, a betting outlet, and travel agencies. Its collapse has raised urgent concerns about structural integrity and regulatory oversight in the area.
Hon. Olojede in a chat with Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com) emphasized that the council remains committed to prioritizing public safety, ensuring complying Lagos State building standards, and supporting affected families during this difficult time.
