Electoral integrity in Nigeria remains a formidable challenge. Corruption, vote-buying, weak institutions, and technological lapses continue to erode public trust. Yet, since 1999, reforms and peaceful transfers of power have demonstrated resilience in the nation’s democratic journey.
One prominent figure who has consistently confronted these challenges is Ayodele Peter Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti State. Fayose has distinguished himself by speaking out against electoral malpractice, advocating for strong and credible institutions, and inspiring young people to embrace their role as vital agents of nation-building. His message encourages the youth to embody integrity, moral excellence, and talent—qualities essential for securing a resilient and prosperous future for Nigeria.
As Ekiti State prepares for its governorship election on Saturday, June 20, 2026, Fayose’s voice remains influential. His vision has long positioned Ekiti as a model state, admired not only within Nigeria but across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Although a senior chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose has openly declared his support for the re-election of Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He argues that the incumbent has convincingly demonstrated readiness for leadership through tangible achievements and impactful governance. In Fayose’s view, Oyebanji’s performance validates the trust of the people, and his support for the Governor’s continuation in office is firm and uncompromised.
Fayose’s leadership style has been both farsighted and pragmatic. He emphasizes that realistic governance must balance policy expectations with cost implications and funding strategies. His people-oriented approach reflects this principle. He further believes that those who claim the mantle of Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s political legacy must carry forward his vision across the South-West states—Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos, Osun, and Kwara.
The former Governor has praised Oyebanji’s administration for surpassing predecessors in education, workers’ welfare, transportation, human capital development, and road infrastructure. He has urged Ekiti citizens to consolidate these gains by voting decisively for continuity, ensuring that the dividends of democracy remain uninterrupted.
While many analysts argue that Nigeria’s electoral integrity is undermined by systemic challenges, Fayose insists that Ekiti offers a unique opportunity to change the narrative. He believes the state can set a precedent for sub-national governance and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
For Fayose, the forthcoming election represents a litmus test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity. It will measure the credibility of reforms introduced under the Electoral Act 2022 and test the capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver free, fair, and transparent elections.
Drawing on his experience as a former Governor and stakeholder, Fayose underscores that the outcome must be credible and acceptable to the people. Such a result, he argues, would reinforce public trust in democratic institutions and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s broader democratic journey.
