The Delta State chapter of the Working People United (WOPU) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the 2027 general elections, vowing to mobilise workers and residents across the state in support of both leaders.
The endorsement was made during the inauguration of the Delta State chapter in Asaba, where labour leaders and members of the organisation declared their backing for the President and the governor, citing bold economic reforms and a commitment to good governance.
Speaking at the event, Comrade Prince Williams Akporeha, former President of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and National Trustee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), explained that WOPU had adopted President Tinubu as its preferred candidate for the 2027 election.
Akporeha noted that although the removal of fuel subsidy had caused hardship, it was a necessary step to restore fiscal stability. He revealed that discussions with the President convinced him that the administration inherited severe financial challenges, including an empty treasury and unsustainable borrowing to meet salary obligations.
He commended Tinubu for approving a new national minimum wage and reducing the review cycle for workers’ salaries from five years to three years, describing these measures as evidence of the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
On Delta State, Akporeha praised Governor Oborevwori for what he described as quality leadership and dedication to delivering the dividends of democracy. He urged workers across the state to rally behind the governor, insisting that his administration deserved continued support.
Akporeha explained that WOPU was established as a civic and political movement to encourage greater participation of working people in governance while promoting policies that improve welfare. He stressed that the organisation represents workers in both the formal and informal sectors and is committed to influencing public policy.
“We are here for two reasons: to advocate good policies and to support good politics. Working people should not only demand accountability but also identify and support leaders who can deliver good governance,” he said.
He further disclosed that former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, had been invested as patron of the organisation, while emphasising that WOPU was not sponsored by any politician or political office holder.
In his acceptance speech, the newly inaugurated Delta State Coordinator of WOPU, Comrade Ogberejitinor Obatarhe, pledged to lead the organisation in line with its constitution and intensify public enlightenment on government policies.
Obatarhe highlighted that many residents lacked adequate information about government programmes and promised to leverage social media and other communication platforms to educate the public. He also vowed to expand WOPU’s membership across Delta State and assured the national leadership that the chapter would effectively mobilise workers and residents ahead of the 2027 elections.
