The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has announced the appointment of Mr. S.D. Kum as its new Head of National Office (HNO), effective Friday, October 2, 2026.
Mr. Kum, until now the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration at WAEC Nigeria, succeeds Dr. Amos Dangut, who has been elevated to the position of Registrar of WAEC International. Dr. Dangut, who served nearly three years as Nigeria’s HNO, will officially assume his new role at the council’s international headquarters in Accra, Ghana, on the same date.
With decades of operational and field experience across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, Mr. Kum brings a wealth of expertise to his new leadership role. He previously served as WAEC Branch Controller and Zonal Coordinator in several regions, including Rivers State, where he was instrumental in enforcing the Nigeria Examinations Committee’s (NEC) anti-malpractice directives.
In 2022, Mr. Kum gained national prominence when he issued de-recognition letters to 35 secondary schools in Rivers State indicted for mass cheating and examination malpractice. His firm stance against examination fraud earned him respect among education stakeholders and reinforced WAEC’s commitment to integrity.
Throughout his career, Mr. Kum has worked closely with state ministries of education, school principals, and security agencies to design effective examination timetables, ensure smooth coordination, and maintain secure testing environments. His appointment is widely seen as a continuation of WAEC Nigeria’s drive to strengthen credibility, transparency, and efficiency in the conduct of examinations.
WAEC Nigeria expressed confidence that under Mr. Kum’s leadership, the council will consolidate ongoing reforms, deepen collaboration with stakeholders, and uphold its mandate of delivering reliable assessment services to millions of candidates across the country.
