Breaking: WAEC Appoints Nigeria’s Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as New Registrar/CEO

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut of Nigeria as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a five-year tenure, effective October 2026 to September 2031.

He succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

The announcement was released to journalists including Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com) on Friday by the Council’s Head of Public Affairs, (image maker), Demianus G. Ojijeogu, ANIPR, at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dr. Dangut holds multiple academic qualifications, including a Bachelor of Agriculture (Animal Production), Master of Science (Animal Science), Ph.D. in Animal Science, and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

Dr. Dangut began his professional career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, before joining WAEC in 1998. Over the years, he has served in various capacities across Nigeria, including Assistant Registrar, Senior Assistant Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Zonal Coordinator, and ultimately as Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC Nigeria from October 2023 until his elevation as Registrar.

His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s International Governing Board at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Renowned as an astute test developer and administrator, Dr. Dangut has championed innovations that strengthened examination delivery, security, and integrity. These include the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialisation of question papers, and the introduction of a Digital Electronic Marking System. He also oversaw the launch of WAEC’s Digital Certificate Portal, E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive, and advanced systems for logistics and examiner monitoring.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dangut has been commended for integrity, transparency, and diligence. He received recognition from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006, and an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his NYSC service.

Beyond his administrative roles, Dr. Dangut has contributed to education policy as a board member of the NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB, and the Grange Educational Foundation, while representing WAEC in national and international education forums. He is also the Regional Representative of West Africa on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

A Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) and member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM), Dr. Dangut is also a published scholar with numerous papers in international and national journals.

Away from work, he enjoys swimming, tennis, farming, and spending time with his family.
