Hon. Rotimi Makinde, a prominent voice on national issues and a respected chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has commended the Federal Government, security agencies, and the Oyo State Government for their coordinated efforts in securing the release of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Makinde who represented Ife Federal Constituency in the 7th Assembly described the successful rescue operation announced by the Presidency on July 10, 2026, as a landmark achievement for Nigeria’s security architecture. The operation brought an end to a harrowing 56-day ordeal for the abducted students and educators from schools in Ogbomoso.
He as well emphasized that the rescue represents not only a source of immense relief for the victims and their families but also a significant boost to public confidence in the nation’s security institutions.
He noted that the operation underscores the importance of synergy between federal and state authorities, stressing that coordinated responses send a clear message to criminal elements that Nigeria will not tolerate acts of terror against its citizens.
While commending the breakthrough, he appealed to the government to sustain momentum by further strengthening intelligence gathering, enhancing community engagement, and implementing proactive measures to prevent future abductions.
Makinde reiterated that initiatives that prioritize school safety and the protection of vulnerable groups nationwide should be promoted.
In a statement released to newsmen in the early hours of Monday, Hon. Makinde said:
“I sincerely commend the efforts of the Federal Government, the security agencies, and the people and government of Oyo State for this major breakthrough in securing the release of the abducted students and their teachers, who were held captive by violent terrorists for over 56 days.”
He expressed sorrow over the tragic death of Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a dedicated mathematics teacher whose passing during captivity sparked national outrage and compelled the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) to declare an indefinite strike over school security.
“His death remains a painful reminder of the urgent need to safeguard our schools. Yet today, to the glory of God, the narrative has changed. I congratulate the NUT on this hard-won victory and commend their patience, patriotism, and solidarity with their colleagues during this difficult time.”
Makinde also acknowledged the painstaking negotiations and emotional toll endured by government officials, parents, and affected families throughout the crisis. He praised the resilience and prayers of Nigerians, which he said contributed to the eventual success of the rescue mission.
“On the strength of this major breakthrough, I make a passionate appeal to the Government not to relent in stemming the tide of insecurity across every corner of our beloved country. Once again, I congratulate all Nigerians on this good news, and most importantly, I celebrate the abductees who came out alive and will soon reunite with their families.”
