The Ogun State Government has taken a young girl, Mistura Adebayo, into protective custody and commenced medical examinations after she was reportedly found wandering alone on two separate occasions, raising concerns about her safety and well-being.

The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed that the intervention began after reports about the girl were brought to the attention of the immediate past Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, by Adetoun Adejobi.

According to the Ministry, Adeleye swiftly alerted the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Adebimpe Folusho Obienu, who directed social workers to the police station where Mistura had initially been taken. However, by the time officials arrived, the child had already been released into the care of her grandmother.

In a dramatic turn, authorities received fresh reports the following day that the girl was once again wandering unattended. The development prompted an urgent second intervention, leading to her placement under the custody of the state government.

Officials confirmed that medical investigations are now underway to determine Mistura’s health condition and uncover any underlying issues that may have contributed to the incidents.

The Ministry emphasized that the child’s welfare remains its top priority, assuring residents that every necessary step is being taken to ensure her protection and secure a stable, long-term care arrangement that serves her best interests.

The case has also reignited calls for vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable children and other at-risk members of society.

Urging residents not to remain silent in the face of abuse, neglect or exploitation, the Ministry appealed to the public to promptly report cases involving gender-based violence, child abuse, abandonment and other threats to the safety of women and children.

“Prompt reporting can save lives and protect vulnerable persons,” the Ministry stated, stressing that community intervention often plays a crucial role in preventing harm and ensuring timely support for those in distress.

The government says it will continue to monitor Mistura’s situation closely as investigations and assessments progress.
