The organising secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, was laid to rest on Tuesday in Ketu, Lagos, amid an outpouring of grief from family members, colleagues, friends, and supporters.
Viral videos circulating on social media showed a large crowd of mourners paying their last respects to the union leader, whose sudden death has sparked widespread sorrow and speculation.
Ajiboye died after sustaining gunshot injuries when unidentified gunmen attacked his vehicle in the Fadeyi area of Lagos on Sunday evening. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced that a manhunt had been launched for the assailants.
Reacting to the tragedy, Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally and dependable friend.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. He was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation. His friendship, unwavering support, and selfless dedication to the union will forever remain etched in my heart,” Adekunle said.
While police investigations continue, no official update has been issued on the killing, leaving room for speculation about the circumstances surrounding Ajiboye’s death.
The burial also generated reactions across social media, with many users expressing grief and suspicion. Some mourners suggested that those responsible for the attack might have been present at the funeral. On Facebook, videos captured mourners cursing the killers as the crowd wailed in grief.
Ajiboye’s death has cast a shadow over the NURTW community, raising concerns about violence within transport unions and leaving supporters demanding justice for the slain leader.
