NSCDC arrests Edo scavenger after buying stolen electric wires

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended a suspect who is allegedly receiving and dealing in suspected stolen items in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Spokesperson of the state command, Ogbebor Efosa, the suspect’s arrest followed credible intelligence received by the Command on 5th June, 2026, indicating that certain individuals were engaged in the business of buying and selling suspected stolen materials within Benin City.

He said this led to the arrest of one Ibrahim Ismail, 36 years old, of Obakawaye Street, Benin City, Edo State, who is engaged in scavenging activities.

The statement reads, “The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a suspect who is allegedly receiving and dealing in suspected stolen items in the state.

“This development followed credible intelligence received by the Command on 5th June, 2026, indicating that certain individuals were engaged in the business of buying and selling suspected stolen materials within Benin City.

“Upon receipt of the intelligence, the Tracking Unit under the Intelligence and Investigation Department immediately swung into action and carried out intelligence-led operations which resulted in the arrest of one Ibrahim Ismail, 36 years old, of Obakawaye Street, Benin City, Edo State, who is engaged in scavenging activities.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly purchased aluminium windows from unidentified persons. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to obtaining such items from unknown individuals. Further findings showed that the suspect also purchased electric copper wire for ₦30,000 part of which had allegedly been burnt for further processing.”

Speaking on the arrest, the State Commandant, Commandant Akintayo Ayinla, reiterated the commitment of the Command towards ensuring that criminality is not allowed to thrive in Edo State.

The Commandant said, “The NSCDC Edo State Command remains determined to ensure that criminals and those supporting criminal activities have no hiding place in Edo State. We will continue to deploy intelligence-driven strategies and operational measures to flush out criminal elements and maintain law and order across the State.”

He stated that investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons connected to the case who are currently at large, adding that on conclusion of investigation, the suspect would be charged to court accordingly.

The Command further called on members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to support the collective fight against crime.
