Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has unveiled plans for a transformative collaboration between the Lagos State Government and global technology giant Google aimed at advancing maternal healthcare and reducing preventable maternal deaths across the state.
During a high-level meeting at Lagos House, Marina, the Governor received a Google delegation led by Olumide Balogun, Director for East and West Africa, to explore innovative technology-driven solutions that can strengthen healthcare delivery for pregnant women, particularly in underserved communities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos State’s significant strides in reducing maternal mortality through sustained investments in healthcare infrastructure, skilled birth attendance, emergency response services, and enhanced referral systems.
He also noted that the state has successfully identified high-risk districts and monitored community health challenges to improve outcomes for expectant mothers.
Despite the progress, the Governor emphasized that more work remains to be done.
“We are committed to ensuring that no woman is left behind. Technology presents a powerful opportunity to identify healthcare gaps earlier, improve planning, and guarantee safe and timely maternal care for every pregnant woman, regardless of where she lives in Lagos,” he said.
The proposed partnership signals a bold step toward leveraging data, innovation, and digital solutions to address one of the most critical public health challenges in Africa’s largest city, positioning Lagos as a leader in technology-enabled healthcare delivery.
As Lagos joins forces with Google, the future of maternal healthcare in the state may be on the verge of a groundbreaking transformation.
