The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the passing of legendary actor Olu Jacobs, widely regarded as one of the greatest pillars of Nollywood.
In a statement obtained by Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com) Veteran actor, singer, and former National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Segun Arinze, described Jacobs as “more than an actor; he was an institution.” In a heartfelt tribute, Arinze praised Jacobs’ commanding presence, remarkable versatility, and unwavering commitment to excellence, noting that his influence helped shape Nollywood into the global force it is today.
“Olu Jacobs was a master of his craft, a teacher through his performances, and an inspiration to generations of actors,” Arinze said. “His voice may be silent, but his work, his influence, and the standards he set will continue to speak for generations.”
Arinze emphasized that Jacobs’ passing marks the end of an extraordinary era in the Nigerian movie industry. He extended condolences to Jacobs’ family, especially his wife, actress Joke Silva, and their children, urging them to find strength during this difficult time.
“As colleagues, we mourn a great man. As an industry, we celebrate an enduring legacy. The stage is yours no more, but your legacy remains forever,” Arinze concluded.
Jacobs, whose career spanned decades across stage, television, and film, leaves behind a body of work that defined professionalism and artistry in African cinema. His death is being described as a monumental loss not only to Nollywood but to the entire continent’s creative community.
