In less than two years in office, Governor Monday Okpebholo has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most talked-about subnational leaders, earning a string of prestigious awards, attracting landmark federal investments, and securing an unprecedented early endorsement for a second term from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Since assuming office on November 12, 2024, Governor Okpebholo has anchored his administration on the ambitious SHINE Agenda – Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Education – a development blueprint that is rapidly reshaping Edo State’s governance landscape.
A Trail of Awards and Recognition
The governor’s performance has drawn acclaim from across religious, professional, and governance circles. Most recently, he was named e-Government Governor of the Year at the Nigeria e-Government Excellence Awards 2026, while Edo State secured six additional awards, including Best State Business Enabling Environment and State Digital Transformation Champion.
His growing reputation also earned him a nomination as Leadership Newspaper’s Governor of the Year 2026, recognizing significant interventions in road construction, education funding, healthcare delivery, and security reforms.
Beyond politics and governance, Okpebholo has gained recognition for fostering inclusiveness and unity. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) honored him with the Christian Icon Award, while the Edo State Council for Islamic Affairs presented him with the Outstanding Leadership and Muslim Inclusion Award.
The accolades add to a growing list of honors, including Emerging Governor of the Year by the Foreign Investment Network in Dubai, Governor of the Year in Education by New Telegraph, and a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Benin.
Major Federal Transport Project Heads to Edo
In another significant boost for the state, Governor Okpebholo has secured Edo’s place in the Federal Government’s ambitious transport modernization drive.
The governor recently welcomed plans for the establishment of a Smart National Transport Data Bank in Edo State and immediately pledged 1,000 square metres of land to facilitate the project.
Receiving a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Transportation led by Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olufunso Adebiyi, at Government House in Benin City, the governor described the project as a game-changer that would drive economic growth, create jobs, strengthen security, boost revenue generation, and facilitate technology transfer.
“Setting up a transport data centre in Edo State is huge. The social and economic benefits will be enormous. It will create jobs, generate revenue, strengthen security, and further uplift our economy,” the governor stated.
He directed the Edo Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS) to commence the process of making the required land available, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transforming Edo into a modern technological hub.
Federal officials revealed that the project forms part of President Bola Tinubu’s vision to develop a coordinated and structured transport data management system for Nigeria, similar to existing frameworks in the aviation sector.
Significantly, Edo became the first state visited by the federal delegation, a move widely interpreted as a vote of confidence in the state’s readiness for transformative investments.
APC Rewards Performance with Early Second-Term Endorsement
Perhaps the clearest indication of Okpebholo’s growing political capital came on October 24, 2026, when the APC in Edo State officially endorsed him for a second term in office.
The endorsement was announced during the grand finale of the party’s grassroots mobilization programme in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area.
State APC Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, said the party’s State Working Committee arrived at the decision after reviewing the governor’s performance across the three senatorial districts of Edo South, Edo North, and Edo Central.
Party leaders cited ongoing road infrastructure projects, teacher recruitment initiatives, education reforms, healthcare facility upgrades, and enhanced security measures as evidence of an administration delivering on its promises.
The party also reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that Edo would remain a stronghold for the APC.
Accepting the endorsement, Governor Okpebholo thanked party leaders and members for their confidence, pledging to remain focused on delivering greater dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.
A Rising Governance Model
From securing national recognition for digital transformation to attracting strategic federal projects and earning bipartisan commendation for inclusive governance, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration is increasingly being viewed as a model of focused leadership and developmental governance.
For many observers, the combination of visible infrastructure development, investment attraction, technological advancement, educational support, and political stability explains why the governor’s first two years in office have generated such widespread acclaim.
As Edo State continues its march toward modernization under the SHINE Agenda, supporters believe the governor’s trajectory points to a leadership era that could leave a lasting imprint on the state’s development story.
