The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed several markets and plazas in the Ayobo-Ipaja axis of Lagos State following repeated environmental infractions and failure to comply with directives on proper waste disposal.
In a statement issued Monday by LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, the agency said the enforcement action was part of sustained interventions to curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the area.
Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed that the latest operation, conducted on Sunday by the LAWMA Project WISE team, led to the closure of Rock of Age Plaza, Ajerogun 1 Market, Ayobo Market, and Oba Plaza.
Gbadegesin explained that the enforcement complemented ongoing waste evacuation and sanitation exercises across the axis, where LAWMA teams had cleared accumulated refuse from locations including Oluwaga Bus Stop by Sawmill, Ayobo Road median by Rainoil, Atan Nla by TCN, Ayobo Police Post, and Megida Bus Stop.
“We will continue to combine waste evacuation with sustained monitoring and enforcement to ensure that cleared locations do not relapse into waste black spots,” Gbadegesin said.
He stressed that lasting environmental improvement requires cooperation from residents, traders, businesses, and other waste generators, urging them to comply with approved disposal arrangements and patronize their assigned PSP operators.
Gbadegesin reiterated LAWMA’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations, warning that individuals, markets, plazas, and facilities found violating waste management laws would face strict sanctions.
