The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
According to the government, the measure is designed to strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and promote a more orderly transportation system across the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, confirmed that the ban will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
“This policy forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property, improve traffic flow, and ensure a more organised transport system in the affected urban centres,” the statement read.
Enforcement Measures
All commercial motorcycle operators are directed to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas on or before the effective date.
Security agencies and enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance.
Violators will be arrested, and their motorcycles confiscated in line with the law.
The government further urged residents, transport operators, community leaders, and the general public to cooperate fully with the authorities in implementing the directive, stressing that the policy is aimed at advancing collective safety and the overall development of the state.
All concerned parties have been advised to take immediate note and comply accordingly.
