On Friday, June 12, 2026 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, describing June 12 as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history.
He urged citizens to continue strengthening democratic institutions built on the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom.In his Democracy Day address, the President stated: “June 12 holds a sacred place in our national memory. It represents more than an election; it is a defining chapter in our collective story.”
Tinubu honored the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, emphasizing that Abiola secured a pan-Nigerian mandate that transcended ethnicity and religion.
He also remembered Alhaja Kudirat Abiola and other pro-democracy activists and leaders who resisted military rule and championed the cause of democracy.
Among those mentioned were Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Alfred Rewane, Pa Abraham Adesanya, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Dr Beko Ransome-Kuti, Frank Kokori, Arthur Nwankwo, Chima Ubani and Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s “heroes and heroines of democracy” secured the freedoms enjoyed today.
Reflecting on the responsibility of the present generation, he stated: “As beneficiaries of their struggle, we have a duty to strengthen and deepen the democratic institutions for which they fought.”
He further noted that the greatest tribute to their legacy is to build a nation where freedom is safeguarded, justice is upheld, opportunities are expanded, and government remains accountable.
The President described the June 12, 1993 election as a powerful symbol of national unity and possibility, declaring: “June 12 revealed the potential of a true Nigerian nation.”
