President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has called on Nigerians in the diaspora to channel their capital, expertise, and networks into investments that will accelerate Nigeria’s economic growth and strengthen its global standing.
Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the opening of the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026 in Toronto, Canada, President Tinubu praised Nigerians abroad for their resilience, enterprise, and contributions to both the global economy and Nigeria’s image.
“Nigeria sees you. Nigeria values you. Nigeria needs you,” the President told hundreds of participants at the three-day conference themed “Thrive Abroad, Invest in Nigeria.”
Tinubu described Nigerians in the diaspora as vital ambassadors whose accomplishments across diverse fields demonstrate the ingenuity and determination of the Nigerian people. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for diaspora investments, noting that ongoing reforms are designed to strengthen the economy, improve the business climate, and unlock sustainable opportunities.
Highlighting Nigeria’s recovery trajectory, the President cited real GDP growth of 3.89% in Q1 2026, manufacturing expansion of 3.29%, inflation easing to 15.91%, and foreign reserves closing 2025 at $45.4 billion. He added that the IMF projects 4.1% growth in 2026, while the World Bank has acknowledged progress in restoring macroeconomic stability and strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal position.
Tinubu urged Nigerians abroad to move beyond remittances and embrace structured investments through professionally governed clubs, sector funds, and venture networks. He stressed the importance of transparency, due diligence, and governance in diaspora-led initiatives, while assuring that government will provide predictable rules, efficient consular services, and stronger protection against fraud.
The President also appealed for unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that partisan interests must not undermine national stability. He emphasized that diaspora engagement should include knowledge transfer, technology, and managerial expertise to build capacity for future generations.
Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the conference as a historic opportunity to harness diaspora expertise for national development. She urged Nigerians abroad to see the country not only as home but also as a prime destination for investment.
The event was attended by state governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, and senior government officials, underscoring its significance as a platform for deepening diaspora engagement in Nigeria’s economic transformation.
