Unity Colleges Remain Shut Amid Kings College Concession Dispute

Resumption of Nigeria’s 155 Federal Government–run unity colleges was stalled on Monday as parents and guardians withheld their children from returning after the long holiday.

The disruption follows the concession of Kings College, Lagos, to its Old Boys Association — a move that has drawn strong opposition from parents and stakeholders.

Nationwide checks revealed that campuses were largely deserted, with classrooms and hostels empty.

Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association of Unity Colleges in the South-West, Mr. Ayopo Somefun, stated that the schools would remain closed until the Federal Government reverses the concession. He warned that if the policy is allowed to stand, it could be extended to other unity colleges, undermining the original purpose for which they were established.

Further details are expected as the standoff continues.
