In the face of Nigeria’s growing insecurity and socio-political tensions, trade unionists have been strongly advised to adopt proactive measures to safeguard themselves, their organizations, and the communities they represent.
Speaking on the theme “How to Be Security Conscious as a Trade Unionist in Nigeria Today,” Comrade (Alhaji) Saheed Gbolahan Adigun, Chairman of PTD Lagos Zone and National Security Coordinator of NUPENG, emphasized that security consciousness has become indispensable for effective unionism in the country.
Adigun outlined practical steps for union leaders and members to strengthen their safety and resilience.
He stressed the importance of situational alertness, urging unionists to remain vigilant during meetings, rallies, and negotiations, while avoiding distractions in public spaces. He also highlighted travel safety, advising careful route planning, avoidance of late-night movements, and reliance on trusted transportation.
On digital security, Adigun called for stronger digital hygiene practices, including the use of secure passwords, two-factor authentication, and encrypted communication platforms to protect sensitive union data. He further recommended vetting attendees at union gatherings to prevent infiltration and the establishment of crisis management plans for protests and negotiations that may attract government or security agency attention.
Adigun also underscored the need for balanced advocacy, urging unionists to defend workers’ rights without resorting to inflammatory rhetoric. He encouraged community engagement with local leaders and civil society groups, security agencies like Police, NSCDC, DSS, Military especially where necessary so as to build protective networks, alongside maintaining open dialogue with government authorities to reduce misunderstandings.
He further commended the leadership style of the Executive President of NUPENG, Comrade Dr. Otunba Salimon Akanni Oladiti (JP), describing him as a model of constructive engagement and visionary leadership. According to Adigun, Dr. Oladiti’s tenure has been marked by inclusivity, firmness, and a strong commitment to workers’ welfare, which has strengthened NUPENG’s credibility and unity in challenging times.
“Dr. Oladiti’s emphasis on dialogue over confrontation has helped reduce industrial disputes, while his strategic foresight has ensured the union remains relevant in navigating the rapidly evolving oil and gas sector. His leadership inspires confidence among members, promotes solidarity, and reinforces resilience in the face of national challenges,” Adigun stated.
Other recommendations included fostering union solidarity, organizing training workshops on safety and conflict management, establishing emergency hotlines, and strengthening cybersecurity to counter misinformation. He also emphasized psychological preparedness, urging unionists to prioritize stress management and resilience-building to remain calm and coordinated during emergencies.
Adigun concluded with a call to vigilance and adaptability:
“By combining personal safety practices, organizational safeguards, and collective solidarity, trade unionists can continue to champion workers’ rights while minimizing risks in a volatile environment.”
