Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in Ogun State and convener of The Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has called for a historic intervention to reorganize, authenticate, and codify Yoruba history, likening the effort to a “Nicaea Moment” for the Yoruba nation.
In a thought-provoking statement, Showunmi revealed that his recent conversation with an Emeritus Professor of African history reinforced his conviction that the time has come for a deliberate and structured effort to harmonize Yoruba historical narratives.
“Perhaps the time has come for a Yoruba Nicaea: not to invent our history, but to safeguard it for eternity,” he declared.
The Case for a Yoruba Historical Commission
Showunmi proposed the establishment of a Yoruba Historical Commission comprising historians, traditional rulers, archaeologists, linguists, anthropologists, religious scholars, archivists, and representatives of major Yoruba cultural institutions.
The Commission, he argued, would not impose a single narrative but would distinguish between established facts, credible traditions, and areas of scholarly debate. Its tasks would include:
- Collecting and digitizing oral histories across Yorubaland.
- Reviewing archaeological and linguistic evidence on Yoruba origins and migration.
- Harmonizing royal genealogies where possible.
- Establishing a comprehensive historical archive.
- Developing educational materials for schools and universities.
- Publishing an authoritative Yoruba Historical Compendium.
Preserving Identity for the Future
Showunmi emphasized that history shapes identity, warning that “a people uncertain about their past will struggle to define their future.” He noted that the Yoruba civilization boasts sophisticated indigenous political systems, rich literary traditions, profound philosophical concepts, and enduring institutions of governance—all of which deserve preservation through modern scholarly methods while respecting traditional custodians of knowledge.
“The wisdom of our elders and the rigor of modern historical methodology should complement, not compete with, each other,” he said.
A Call to Action
As Africa increasingly reclaims ownership of its narratives, Showunmi urged the Yoruba nation to lead by example in demonstrating how a civilization can preserve its heritage while adapting to modern demands.
He concluded that future generations deserve more than fragmented memories and competing accounts. They deserve a carefully preserved inheritance—authentic, evidence-based, intellectually rigorous, and proudly Yoruba.
