As voters in Osun State head to the polls, political commentator Otunba Segun Showunmi has urged stakeholders to embrace calm and maturity, warning that the heightened tension surrounding the off-season election risks undermining the essence of democracy.
In a statement obtained by Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com) titled “Osun Decides: Time for Reflection Beyond the Noise,” Showunmi expressed concern over the level of hostility, accusations, and political drama that have accompanied the election, describing it as disproportionate compared to similar contests in other states.
“Elections are important, but they should not become occasions for collective anxiety, hostility, and endless political theatre. No democratic contest is worth the loss of human life,” he said.
Showunmi condemned reports of violence and alleged fatalities linked to the electoral process, stressing that such incidents represent a serious indictment of Nigeria’s political culture. He emphasized that democracy must be about peaceful competition, not destruction of the system that enables it.
He insisted that any proven violations of the law during the election must attract firm and immediate consequences, warning that selective accountability would weaken democratic institutions.
Highlighting Osun’s proud history and cultural heritage, Showunmi said the state should be known for the quality of its democratic engagement rather than the noise and tension surrounding its elections.
“The people will continue to live together long after the ballots have been counted. Political opponents today remain neighbours tomorrow,” he noted.
As results begin to emerge, Showunmi urged all stakeholders — political actors, supporters, election officials, security agencies, and citizens, to reflect on how democracy in Osun can become calmer, more mature, and more aligned with the aspirations of its people.
He concluded with a prayer for peace, credibility, and an outcome that reflects the will of the people.
