In a continued effort to strengthen collaboration between the Lagos State Government and its Federal Representatives, the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE) has paid a strategic working visit to Federal Lawmakers Representing Lagos State at the National House of Assembly, Abuja.

The delegation, led by Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, and Permanent Secretary, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, visited the National Assembly between Monday, 13th October and Thursday, 16th October, 2025.

While engaging members of Federal Legislators Representing Lagos State, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen extended the goodwill of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and Mr. Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, reiterating the State Government’s commitment to deepening intergovernmental cooperation, strengthening mutual trust, and advancing inclusive governance that resonates from the grassroots to the highest levels of decision-making.

In his words “Each time we visit the National Assembly we walk away with a renewed sense of purpose, insight, understanding, and commitment to shared goals. We are here to listen, collaborate, and ensure that the voices of our people are heard in the corridors of power.”

“Every discussion here will be followed up with action and a detailed report will be presented to Mr. Governor and Mr. Deputy Governor for actionable follow-up. We aim to foster synergy that translates into tangible impact for residents of Lagos, bridging the gap between State and Federal policy outcomes,” he added.

Welcoming the delegation, Member of the House of Representatives (MHR) Epe Federal Constituency Hon. Raji Tasir Olawale, commended the Lagos State Government for the initiative and praised the proactive engagement of the OPL&CE team. He noted that Lagos State had achieved visible progress through projects such as the blue, red, and green rail lines.

Hon. Raji also called for more collaborations between other Lagos State Ministries, Department and Agencies and the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, noting that public feedback platforms such as Opinion Survey, Town Hall and the Celebration of 100 Days in Office by Public Office Holders serve as effective mechanisms that can help citizens feel government’s pulse and provide feedback for policy adjustments.

During the visit to his Office by the OPL&CE team, the Senator Representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, applauded the Office for initiating direct engagement with federal lawmakers, observing that the Office should establish a robust framework to drive its legislative engagement and monitoring activities.

Also hosting the delegation, Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Senator Oluranti Adebule, lauded the State Government for its consistent engagement and expressed readiness to collaborate on joint stakeholder initiatives and projects being executed in their communities.

She disclosed that her office, since June 2023 has embarked on several constituency projects including the construction of classroom blocks across five schools in different parts of Lagos West, the lighting up of communities to enhance local security, building a market at Agbado Oke-Odo to be handed over to the people when completed and presently the construction of a youth development centre in Badagry equipped with ICT facilities that can accommodate about 400 students for skill acquisition programs.

She added that these initiatives are aimed to empower youths and supporting community development, however, many people still do not know about them, adding that OPL&CE can help amplify the efforts and provide a common platform for engagement and accountability especially in Lagos West Senatorial District which is the largest Senatorial District in the State.

Responding to the legislators, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, appreciated the lawmakers for their insights and assured them that the Office would integrate the recommendations into its civic engagement framework.

While noting that the Office was committed to improving two-way communication between citizens and government through field visits, targeted surveys, and community-level feedback collection, the Permanent Secretary said that a lot would be done to drive the State’s desired people-centric governance. OPL&CE is disaggregating its citizen engagement initiatives to achieve greater granularity in reach and participation.

The highlight of the visit was the presentation of the White cap chiefs and the Eyo Effigy, a cultural symbol of Lagos State, to the federal legislators including the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Honorable Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, as a gesture of unity, cultural pride, and the enduring connection between Lagos and its representatives in Abuja.

The visiting team of the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement also observed plenary sessions at both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
