The management of Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com), a general purpose news publishing platform has decried the attack on Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) and other electricity distribution companies in Nigeria by armed state actors.
While sharing perspectives earlier on Friday with an online radio station during a group discussion on “rule of law in a constitutional democracy and the role of the military” the publisher and editor-in-chief of the news platform, Emmanuel Ajibulu disclosed that in a democracy, the military plays a vital role in maintaining national security, stability, and protecting the country’s interests, adding that such important state actor must be carefully balanced to ensure that it does not compromise democratic principles and institutions.
Continuing, Ajibulu stated:
“Without being immodest, we must appreciate and commend the military for its relentless commitment and significant contributions to the fight against terrorism, counterinsurgency operations, preventing crime, defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity against all threats, and their dedication to duty and sacrifices for the nation.
“However, there are few elements among them who are seen to have dangerously acted in contrary to the principles of the rule of law. This month of March alone, there are different accounts of excessive use of power against unarmed civilian population. First it was the headquarters of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) in Alausa, Lagos that was attacked by armed personnel from Ikeja Airforce base. The armed officers allegedly vandalised property and brutalised staff and journalists over a power outage and unpaid bills of well over 4 billion naira. The incident took place on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The ugly incident highlights the need for restraint and respect for the rule of law, even among those in positions of authority.
“Sadly there was repeat of similar attack on Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) in Badagry, Lagos State by personnel of the Nigerian Army resulting to forceful abduction, intimidation, assault, brutalisation of members of staff and destruction of the facilities at the substation. This is totally unacceptable, reprehensible and should be condemned by every right thinking citizen. It is also in the news that some naval officers invaded Oju-Ota and Oko Orisan communities in Epe area of Lagos; the embarrassing and life threatening incident literally exposed the owner of Harmony Gardens and Estate Development Limited, Honourable Saheed Audullahi Mosadoluwa and his son into serious danger, a few weeks back.
“The use of armed military personnel to invade a private business premises is a clear example of intimidation and coercion. Bypassing established channels for resolving disputes, such as negotiation or litigation, undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent. The involvement of military personnel in a civilian dispute raises concerns about potential human rights abuses, including arbitrary detention and bodily injury.
“Incidents like this can erode trust in institutions and undermine the legitimacy of those in power. The use of military force to resolve a dispute can have a chilling effect on businesses, making them less likely to invest or operate in an environment where the rule of law is not respected. If left unchecked, this incident could set a precedent for future abuses of power, undermining the stability and security of the country.
“There is a need for a call to action and a thorough investigation into the incident should be conducted, and those responsible should be held accountable for their actions. All parties, including those in positions of authority, should respect the rule of law and adhere to established channels for resolving disputes. The rights of all individuals should be seen to be protected and respected at all times.”
