The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has pledged stronger collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to promote national values, curb misinformation, and prevent crises across the country.
The partnership, according to the IGP, will focus on proactive communication strategies, public enlightenment, and coordinated efforts to counter the spread of fake news, which has increasingly posed threats to peace and security.
By joining forces, the NPF and NOA aim to strengthen civic education, foster trust between citizens and institutions, and ensure that accurate information reaches communities nationwide.
The commitment was made on Thursday, when the Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, paid a courtesy visit to the IGP at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting focused on deepening cooperation between the two agencies to promote responsible citizenship, enhance public enlightenment and build a more secure and united nation.
Issa-Onilu reaffirmed the NOA’s commitment to driving programmes that promote patriotism, civic responsibility and national orientation, stressing that the agency remains committed to fostering values that encourage peace, unity and national cohesion.
He highlighted the Nigeria Identity Project and the National Values Charter as flagship initiatives designed to strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging and shared responsibility.
The NOA boss also proposed a stronger partnership with the police in public sensitisation campaigns, intelligence sharing, community engagement and early conflict prevention, noting that proactive collaboration would help address emerging security challenges before they escalate.
Responding, the Inspector-General described the proposed partnership as timely, saying effective policing goes beyond crime-fighting to include building public trust and promoting ethical conduct.
Disu reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for human dignity, insisting that these values remain critical to strengthening public confidence in the Force. NigerianPolitics Coverage
The police chief also warned against the growing menace of misinformation and fake news, urging Nigerians, particularly young people, to verify information before sharing it on social media.
According to him, the reckless circulation of unverified information can fuel tension, undermine national security and erode public trust.
He called for sustained efforts by government institutions, civil society organisations and citizens to promote positive values, responsible citizenship and peaceful coexistence.
The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s readiness to work closely with the National Orientation Agency to advance national security, crisis prevention and national development through continuous public engagement and strategic collaboration.
