The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned motorists and members of the public against fraudulent text messages falsely claiming that recipients have been recorded for new traffic offences.
In a statement issued by the Corps’ Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, and shared via its official X handle on Wednesday, FRSC disowned the messages and the website “frscgov.top/ng,” stressing that the platform has no affiliation with the Corps.
According to Ohaeri, the fraudulent messages create panic by alleging that a traffic offence has been recorded against the recipient and directing them to click on a suspicious link to “review details.” FRSC warned that such links are designed to harvest sensitive personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.
“No member of the public should click on suspicious links, make payments, or disclose banking information, passwords, card details, driver’s licence information, or vehicle registration details in response to such messages,” the Corps stated.
FRSC advised motorists to preserve evidence of the fraudulent messages, avoid engaging with the senders, and report incidents through official channels. It emphasized that alleged traffic offences should only be verified via its official website, frsc.gov.ng, or through its toll-free line 122.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, mni, directed that the public be sensitised about the scheme, warning those behind the fraudulent activity against impersonating FRSC personnel or deploying counterfeit platforms to deceive motorists.
FRSC assured Nigerians that it is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity agencies to track and prosecute those responsible. The Corps urged the public to adopt its safety mantra: “STOP. VERIFY. REPORT.”
