Former Federal lawmaker Rotimi Makinde, who represented Ife Constituency in the House of Representatives during the 7th Assembly, has made a searing reflection on the harsh realities of Nigerian politics, describing it as “toxic, risky, expensive, and full of intrigues that no book can teach you.”
In his statement obtained by Veracity Desk (veracitydesk.com), titled “The Price of Genuine Desire”, Makinde lamented that politics in historic cities like Ife often transcends ambition and ideas, becoming instead a “spiritual examination center” where intellect and generosity do not always guarantee continuity or loyalty.
Makinde drew vivid analogies, noting that “the white fowl sweats, but the sweat is not visible because of its feathers,” to illustrate the hidden burdens carried by those who serve with sincerity. He warned that genuine desire often clashes with personal ambitions disguised as public interest, leading to betrayal, blackmail, and even threats to life.
“Kidnap, attacks, close shaves with death — not in movies, but in the course of trying to serve genuinely. And still, by grace, the heart keeps beating for the people,” Makinde revealed.
Despite recounting nights of danger and days of betrayal, the former lawmaker insisted that his heart “still beats for the people,” urging Nigerians to show understanding and compassion for leaders who continue to serve despite immense personal sacrifice.
Makinde concluded with a sobering reminder: “It takes more than ambition to survive here. It takes grace. It takes God.”
