Swift intervention by the Anambra State Fire Service on Sunday night averted what could have been a catastrophic explosion after a fully loaded petroleum tanker overturned along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway in Awka.

State Fire Chief, Chukwudi Chiketa, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that the accident occurred at Agu Awka Junction, beside the Revenue Office, around 10:30 p.m. The tanker, which sustained damage during the crash, spilled its contents across the roadway.

“Upon arrival, it was established that the tanker had overturned following the road accident, sustaining damage to some parts and resulting in the spillage of its contents onto the roadway. However, no fire broke out,” Chiketa said.

He explained that the fire service crew immediately secured the area, implemented safety measures, and remained on site until 11:45 p.m. to prevent secondary hazards. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded.

Chiketa emphasized the hazardous nature of petroleum spills and urged motorists and members of the public to exercise extreme caution around accident scenes involving tankers or other dangerous materials. He further appealed to residents to promptly alert the fire service in emergencies to enable rapid response.

The incident highlights the critical role of emergency services in safeguarding lives and property, particularly in high-risk situations involving petroleum products.
