Enugu State is witnessing what many once considered impossible. Barely three years ago, the state was weighed down by insecurity, economic stagnation, crumbling infrastructure, and a loss of confidence that threatened its future. Today, however, a new narrative is unfolding, one driven by bold leadership, strategic investments, and an unwavering commitment to progress.

Speaking during a manifesto performance scorecard presentation at Godfrey Okoye University, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah painted a compelling picture of a government determined not merely to govern, but to transform.

From Fear to Freedom

One of the administration’s most significant accomplishments has been the restoration of normal economic activity across Enugu State.

There was a time when Mondays were synonymous with fear. Streets were deserted, markets shut down, businesses suffered losses, and children remained away from school. Economic life paused for an entire day each week, leaving devastating consequences for families dependent on daily income.

Today, that dark chapter is steadily fading into history.

Markets are bustling, businesses are reopening, and residents are once again moving freely. The restoration of security has become the cornerstone upon which the state’s wider economic revival is being built.

A Vision Bigger Than Politics

Governor Mbah’s ambition was never small.

Upon assuming office in May 2023, he unveiled a bold target: expanding Enugu’s economy from approximately $4.4 billion to over $30 billion within eight years and positioning the state among Nigeria’s top three economies.

For many observers, the goal appeared overly ambitious. Yet Mbah insists that meaningful transformation demands extraordinary thinking.

His administration identified six critical pillars necessary for growth: security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, productive industries, and efficient institutions. Instead of spreading resources thinly across countless projects, the government concentrated on laying solid foundations for long-term prosperity.

Roads, Transport and a State on the Move

Across Enugu, road projects are changing lives in practical and measurable ways.

Roads that once damaged vehicles and delayed movement are being upgraded. New transport terminals and modern buses are redefining mobility, making travel safer, faster, and more reliable.

For farmers, better roads mean easier access to markets. For traders, it means faster delivery of goods. For businesses, it translates to lower operating costs and greater opportunities.

The transformation is not merely about asphalt and concrete; it is about connecting people to opportunities.

Enugu Takes Flight Again

Perhaps nowhere is Enugu’s resurgence more visible than in aviation.

When the current administration came into office, the state’s airport reportedly received barely two incoming flights daily. Today, that number has risen dramatically to more than fifteen.

The rise in air traffic reflects growing investor confidence, increased business activity, and renewed interest in Enugu as a destination for commerce, tourism, and investment.

Through initiatives such as Enugu Air and expanded aviation infrastructure, the state is reconnecting itself with national and international markets, sending a clear signal that Enugu is once again open for business.

The Education Revolution

At the heart of Peter Mbah’s development agenda lies an unprecedented investment in education.

The flagship 260 Smart Green Schools project is more than a construction programme. It is a blueprint for creating a new generation of globally competitive citizens.

The vision is simple yet revolutionary: every ward in Enugu State should have access to modern, technology-driven, quality education, regardless of location.

For children in rural communities, opportunities once reserved for elite urban schools are gradually becoming accessible. The initiative seeks to prepare young people for a rapidly changing world dominated by technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Unlocking Agricultural Prosperity

Enugu’s vast agricultural potential remains one of its strongest competitive advantages.

Recognizing this, the government is pursuing agricultural industrialization by creating value chains that move beyond mere cultivation to processing, packaging, transportation, and marketing.

The objective is clear: ensure that more wealth generated from agriculture remains within local communities.

For thousands of farmers across the state, this approach promises increased earnings, new jobs, and stronger rural economies.

Powering the Future

No economy can grow without reliable electricity.

The administration’s energy strategy focuses on attracting investment, expanding power generation, and creating a business environment where manufacturers, entrepreneurs, and small enterprises can thrive without dependence on costly alternative energy sources.

For business leaders and investors, this commitment to energy development signals a government that understands the fundamentals of economic growth.

Healthcare with a Human Face

Beyond infrastructure and investment, Governor Mbah’s administration has also focused on improving healthcare delivery.

Efforts are underway to strengthen primary healthcare centres, improve medical services, and ensure that quality healthcare becomes more accessible to families across both urban and rural communities.

The aim is straightforward: no parent should struggle to find medical attention for a sick child, no pregnant woman should lack proper care, and no elderly citizen should be denied treatment because of distance or inadequate facilities.

A Government Demanding Accountability

Perhaps one of the most refreshing aspects of Governor Mbah’s address was his insistence on accountability.

According to him, projects should not exist merely in speeches or announcements. Roads should be seen and driven on. Schools should be visited. Public services should be judged by citizens who experience them.

That philosophy represents a significant departure from the era when groundbreaking ceremonies sometimes attracted more attention than completed projects.

The Bigger Picture: Building Tomorrow Today

What emerged from the Governor’s presentation was not simply a list of achievements but a roadmap for sustainable prosperity.

From tourism and hospitality to technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and aviation, Enugu is positioning itself as a regional economic powerhouse ready to compete in a rapidly changing global economy.

The administration believes that the state’s greatest asset is not its natural resources but its people. Consequently, every project, every policy, and every investment is designed to unlock human potential and create opportunities for future generations.

The Verdict So Far

As someone deeply invested in the progress of Enugu State and as a stakeholder from Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area, I see a state increasingly defined by possibility rather than limitation.

Challenges remain. Development is a journey, not a destination. Yet the trajectory is unmistakable.

The fear that once characterized Mondays has been replaced by renewed confidence. Investors are paying attention. Infrastructure is expanding. Education is being reimagined. Economic activities are accelerating.

Enugu is rediscovering itself.

Governor Peter Mbah’s message to Ndi Enugu was simple but powerful: the transformation has begun, but its success depends on collective participation.

If the current momentum is sustained, future generations may indeed look back on this era as the moment Enugu chose progress over complacency, ambition over limitation, and hope over doubt.

As the Governor declared with conviction:

“The morning is upon us. There is much work ahead.”

For many residents across the state today, that morning no longer feels like a promise. It feels like reality.

Ndi Enugu, tomorrow is indeed here.
