As Nigeria marked Democracy Day 2026, Dr. Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group and Managing Director of Sahara Group, delivered a stirring commendation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of the National Honours List.
Dr. Adesina described the recognition of dozens of Nigerians who fought to defend and advance democratic rule as both timely and significant, noting that democracy is never inherited or sustained by chance but earned through conviction, sacrifice, inclusiveness, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.
He emphasized that the freedoms enjoyed today are the product of men and women who chose principle over personal comfort and national progress over self-interest. Their courage and resilience, he said, remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“As a steadfast believer in the promise, potential, and destiny of Nigeria and Africa, I commend His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the 2025 Democracy Day National Honours List.
“The honours fittingly recognize and celebrate the courage, sacrifice, resilience, and patriotism of distinguished individuals whose contributions helped defend, deepen, and advance democracy in our nation
“This recognition is both timely and significant. It serves as a powerful reminder that democracy is neither inherited nor sustained by chance. It is earned through conviction, sacrifice, inclusiveness, and an unwavering commitment to the common good.
“The freedoms we enjoy today are the product of the dedication and courage of men and women who chose principle over personal comfort and national progress over self-interest.
“As we honour these deserving Nigerians, we must also renew our collective commitment to the values that underpin every thriving democratic society—justice, accountability, integrity, tolerance, constructive dialogue, active citizen participation, and unwavering respect for the rule of law. Democracy flourishes when both leaders and citizens embrace these principles not merely in rhetoric, but in action.
“I particularly encourage the younger generation to draw inspiration from the examples of these national heroes and continue to champion democratic ideals through responsible citizenship, productive engagement, innovation, and service to society. The future of our nation rests not only on the strength of our institutions but also on the character, values, and aspirations of its people.
“At this defining moment in our national journey, let us unite around a shared vision of progress, excellence, and inclusive prosperity. Let us work together to build a nation that rewards enterprise, upholds justice, strengthens opportunity, and inspires confidence among future generations.
“In doing so, we will not only realize the full greatness of Nigeria but also contribute meaningfully to the emergence of a stronger, more prosperous, and globally competitive Africa.
“May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the African continent.”
