A Nigerian cleric, Prophet David Kingsley Eli, has called on the Federal Government to intervene over the alleged unlawful retention of Nigerian passports and discriminatory visa processing by the French Embassy in Lagos.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Eli accused the embassy’s consular services of subjecting Nigerian applicants to hostile and unprofessional treatment, alleging that several individuals have had their international passports held for more than two months without updates on their visa applications.
He said those affected include business professionals, students and families, noting that the prolonged delay has disrupted travel plans and economic activities.
The cleric argued that withholding passports for extended periods infringes on citizens’ right to freedom of movement, stressing that the document remains the property of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Eli also warned that the alleged delays and high visa refusal rates could negatively impact trade relations between Nigeria and France, discouraging investors and business engagements.
He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Immigration Service to take diplomatic action and enforce reciprocity. measures and safeguard the rights of Nigerian passport holders.
Eli added that he would continue to advocate for affected applicants until the issue is addressed.
