Nigeria’s film industry is mourning the loss of one of its greatest legends, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR), popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84.
The announcement was made by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, via Instagram on Wednesday. In a heartfelt statement, the family described him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and expressed gratitude for a life of remarkable achievement.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle,” the family wrote.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs’ career spanned over five decades across British television, international cinema, Nigerian theatre, and Nollywood, making him one of the most versatile and respected actors of his generation.
A Career of Global Impact
Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, before launching his career in Britain. He appeared in popular television series such as The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, The Venturers, Angels, The Tomorrow People, and The Professionals.
He later featured in international films including The Dogs of War, Pirates, and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. Upon returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became a towering figure in Nollywood, celebrated for his commanding presence and powerful performances.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his illustrious career, Jacobs received numerous accolades:
- Africa Movie Academy Award (2007) – Best Actor in a Leading Role
- National Honour (2011) – Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR)
- Industry Merit Award (2013) – Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards
- Lifetime Achievement Award (2016) – Africa Movie Academy Awards
His contributions to the arts earned him admiration from colleagues and fans alike, with fellow actors such as Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) and his wife, Joke Silva, often celebrating his legacy.
Family and Legacy
Jacobs’ passing comes just two months after his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, publicly celebrated his 84th birthday, calling him “THE LION OF LUFODO.” She later thanked Nigerians for their prayers and goodwill.
The family has appealed for privacy during this period of mourning, urging bloggers and social media influencers to respect their wishes.
His death also follows years of false reports about his demise, which were repeatedly debunked by the family and the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
Enduring Influence
Olu Jacobs leaves behind a legacy that transcends borders — a body of work that shaped Nollywood and inspired generations of actors. His artistry, discipline, and charisma made him a cultural ambassador for Nigeria and a symbol of excellence in African cinema.
Though the cause of death has not been disclosed, his impact on the film industry and Nigerian culture will remain indelible.
