Chief (Comrade) Austine Ikubese, a community leader and human rights advocate, has issued a powerful open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling for urgent reforms to address Nigeria’s deepening security and governance crises.
In the letter, titled “Confronting Nigeria’s Security and Governance Challenges—Can the Nation Reclaim Its Future?”, Ikubese commended Tinubu’s bold decision to approve crude oil sales to the Dangote Refinery in naira, describing it as a policy that helped stabilize the economy and ease foreign exchange pressures. He likened the move to the democratic courage Tinubu displayed during his NADECO years.
Ikubese, however, warned that Nigeria stands at a crossroads. Drawing lessons from past administrations—from General Yakubu Gowon’s mismanagement of oil wealth to the annulment of Chief Moshood Abiola’s June 12, 1993 election—he stressed that history must not repeat itself.
The activist highlighted the stark contrast between Nigeria’s infrastructure and that of the United States, where he recently vacationed. He urged the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to prioritize not just road construction but also safety features and maintenance.
On governance, Ikubese cautioned Tinubu against surrounding himself with sycophants, insisting that integrity, competence, and accountability must guide leadership. He called for purging government of “deadwood” officials lacking transparency, ensuring free and fair elections ahead of 2027, delivering essential services such as electricity, healthcare, and infrastructure and fostering inclusivity to counter divisive narratives.
Ikubese acknowledged the efforts of Tinubu’s administration but emphasized that Nigerians expect a “decisive break from mediocrity.” He urged the President to transform his Renewed Hope Agenda into a Genuine Hope Agenda that resonates with ordinary citizens.
Concluding his letter, Ikubese reaffirmed loyalty to the President and the APC, while praying for courage and wisdom for Tinubu to lead Nigeria toward unity, justice, and sustainable progress.
