Former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, was the cynosure of all eyes at the convocation ceremony of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, yesterday as he bagged a Master’s degree in Health Law and Policy.
The 70-year-old former governor who enrolled for the master’s degree programme at the university had bagged his first degree in Medicine and Surgery over 40 years ago from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
Mimiko, who was adjudged the best M.Sc graduating student in Health Law and Policy received the Oluwarotimi Akeredolu prize for the best student in Master of Health Law and Policy.
Mimiko, who established the university 10 years ago while serving as the governor, said he was glad to see the institution achieving high feats as it has produced three sets of medical doctors within 10 years. He said the university has enjoyed an uninterrupted academic programme due to the commitment, dedication and resilience of the management of the institution.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has assured that his administration will continue to prioritise education and health because they are fundamental to sustainable development.
He disclosed that the state government has committed N1 billion towards the construction of a new senate building, assuring that his administration is determined to ensure that the university remains a beacon of health professions education in the country.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Higher Education, Dr Olawumi Ilawole, the governor stated that the university has grown to be a force to reckon with both nationally and internationally.
While congratulating the university and the graduates, the governor expressed the readiness of his administration to support the university and other tertiary institutions in the state , saying that the state government will continue to demonstrate unwavering commitment to excellence in health and education.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Adesegun Fatusi, said the university produced 634 graduates.
