Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to commence immediate remedial works on the collapsed section of the East-West Road at Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area, following widespread public outcry.
The intervention, according to the state government, is aimed at easing the severe hardship faced by motorists, residents, and businesses after heavy rainfall triggered erosion and caused the failure of the Federal Government-owned road.
State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed the governor’s directive in a statement issued in Asaba on Thursday.
Aniagwu explained that although the East-West Road is under the Federal Government’s jurisdiction, Governor Oborevwori was deeply concerned about the suffering of Deltans and other Nigerians who rely on the corridor daily.
“Although the East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure, the governor is concerned about the hardship being experienced by Deltans and other Nigerians using the corridor. Consequently, he has directed Julius Berger to immediately intervene and undertake remedial works on the failed portion of the road,” Aniagwu said.
He stressed that the intervention reflects the administration’s people-first approach, prioritizing urgent infrastructure needs over bureaucratic boundaries.
Aniagwu described the East-West Road as a critical economic artery in the Niger Delta, linking communities and facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods, and services. He warned that prolonged disruption could negatively impact commuters, transport operators, traders, and businesses operating along the route.
The commissioner assured road users that the remedial works would restore traffic flow and reduce the hardship caused by the collapse. He added that the state government would continue to collaborate with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to address infrastructure challenges across the state.
Aniagwu also urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching the affected section while repair works are ongoing.
