The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced plans to establish between 50 and 70 smart self-service fuel stations across the country within the next six months, in a bold move to modernize Nigeria’s downstream energy sector.

The disclosure was made by Dr. Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice President, Downstream, NNPC Ltd., during the commissioning of the company’s flagship smart mega fuelling station in Abuja.

Located along Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, the Abuja facility is powered by a 200-kilowatt solar system and boasts a storage capacity of 180,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). It is equipped with 16 PMS pumps and two AGO dispensing pumps, alongside advanced features such as self-service fuel dispensing, electric vehicle (EV) charging, gas dispensing, automated car wash, and vehicle servicing.

Dagazau explained that the initiative represents NNPC’s vision of transforming conventional filling stations into modern energy hubs, offering multiple energy and retail services under one roof.

“We are hoping to roll out a significant number, between 50 and 70 of these types of stations within the next six months. This is what you’ll be seeing going forward from NNPC,” he said.

He emphasized that the new model prioritizes customer convenience, allowing users to access services and make payments seamlessly through the NNPC Retail mobile application. The Abuja station, he noted, is equipped with fast EV chargers capable of fully charging vehicles within 30 to 40 minutes, depending on battery capacity.

Beyond EV charging, the smart stations will also provide Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), lubricants, and other customer-oriented services. Dagazau assured that the modernization drive will not eliminate jobs, but rather create new opportunities in automation, integration, and customer support.

“What we are doing is creating jobs. Personnel are needed to support customers using EV facilities and to manage automation. The difference is in how we deliver services to customers. The guarantee and comfort of the customer are what we are after,” he added.

The EVP further revealed that NNPC plans to modernize existing stations while developing new facilities based on customer demand. He stressed that the company’s retail transformation is driven by changing consumer expectations and advances in technology, with renewable energy playing a central role.

“We cannot ignore innovation and technology and leave our stations the way they have always been. In the next few years, most NNPC stations will look like this,” Dagazau affirmed.

With this rollout, NNPC Ltd. is positioning itself as a pioneer of integrated energy hubs in Africa, combining traditional fuel services with renewable energy, EV infrastructure, and modern retail conveniences.
