The Oyo State Government has officially lifted the curfew imposed on ten local government areas in response to the recent kidnapping incident in Oriire Local Government Area.
Authorities had initially enforced a 16-hour restriction on movement across the affected communities, later extending it by an additional day to ensure public safety and aid ongoing security operations.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government announced that residents are now free to resume their normal daily activities. He expressed gratitude to the people of the affected areas for their patience, cooperation, and understanding during the period of restricted movement.
Prince Oyelade further emphasized that the government remains vigilant and continues to closely monitor the security situation. He reassured citizens that concerted efforts are underway to resolve the kidnapping crisis and restore lasting peace to the region.
The curfew had covered the following LGAs: Oriire local government (Headquarters: Ikoyi-Ile), Orelope (Headquarters: Igboho), Irepo (Headquarters: Kisi), Saki West (Headquarters: Saki), Saki East (Hq Ago-Amodu), Atisbo (Headquarters: Tede / Ago-Are), Itesiwaju (Headquarters: Otu), Iseyin (Headquarters: Iseyin), Olorunsogo (Headquarters: Igbeti), and Atiba (Headquarters: Offa-Meta, Oyo).
The curfew was introduced following the abduction of 45 pupils and teachers on May 15, when armed assailants stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area.
Tragically, reports later confirmed that one of the abducted teachers, a Mathematics instructor, was killed by the attackers.
The Oyo State Government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, pledging to intensify collaboration with security agencies to ensure the safe return of the remaining victims and prevent future occurrences.
