The Nigerian Senate will devote a significant portion of its emergency session on Tuesday to addressing the escalating security challenges across the country. Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday evening.

Adaramodu, who represents Ekiti South Senatorial District, emphasized that the Red Chamber is deeply concerned about the surge in violent crimes, including kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry.

He noted that lawmakers will deliberate extensively on practical measures to reinforce national security and support ongoing efforts by security agencies.

“The Senate is united in its resolve to confront the worsening insecurity head-on. Tomorrow’s session will focus on charting decisive steps to strengthen the fight against kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes threatening the peace and stability of our nation,” Adaramodu said.

The emergency sitting underscores the urgency with which the legislature intends to respond to the growing insecurity, signaling a renewed commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Nigeria.

Adaramodu said the session would provide lawmakers an opportunity to assess the state of the nation and explore ways the National Assembly could work with the Executive to address growing security challenges.

Dismissed speculations that the emergency recall had something to do with any individual senator or over internal controversy, the spokesman insisted that security concerns and other pressing national issues affecting Nigerians would dominate discussions.

According to him, the Senate considers it imperative to convene and deliberate on the rising cases of kidnapping and terrorist activities across the country.

He said: “It is necessary to discuss the state of the nation as a priority and how the National Assembly will help and cooperate with the Executive in order to stamp out the increasing incidents of kidnapping and terrorist activities in Nigeria.

“It will also lead to discussions on the issue of state police and other measures that can be put in place temporarily before the issue of state police goes through the constitutional process.”

Adaramodu explained that senators would be given the opportunity to contribute to the debate based on developments in their constituencies and senatorial districts as well as public perceptions of the security situation.

“Senators will be allowed to debate based on their experiences in their various constituencies and senatorial districts and the general perception of the Nigerian public.”

“We will first discuss those issues. After discussing them, we will know the areas we need to focus on,” he said.

The Senate spokesman stressed that the decision to reconvene was not driven by the leadership alone but reflected a collective resolve among lawmakers to address urgent national concerns.

“It is not a personal thing and it is not even the leadership of the Senate that is calling for this. It is all of us who feel that it is imperative that we come together and discuss these issues,” he said.

On whether the emergency session was specifically convened to discuss the proposed creation of state police, Adaramodu said the focus would be broader.

He said: “The session is to discuss security and other matters affecting the Nigerian public. Not particularly state police. When we say security, we all know that the police are part of it.”

The Nigerian Senate is scheduled to hold an emergency plenary session tomorrow, with insecurity across several parts of the country topping the agenda. Lawmakers are expected to deliberate extensively on the rising wave of violent crimes, including kidnapping, terrorism, and banditry, and to consider legislative measures that can bolster ongoing security operations.

The session underscores the urgency with which the Red Chamber intends to respond to the worsening situation, reflecting its commitment to safeguarding lives and restoring public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
