Anthony Joshua Resumes Training Amid Retirement Speculation

Fresh video circulating online shows Anthony Joshua back in the gym, marking his first return to boxing training since a devastating accident late last year. The footage has drawn attention not because of its intensity, but because of its symbolism, signalling a tentative step forward after a period of loss and silence.

Joshua can be heard describing training as “mental strength therapy,” suggesting that boxing has become part of his emotional recovery rather than a statement about competition or timelines.

Details of the fatal accident
According to GiveMeSport and reporting by combat sports journalist Alan Dawson, Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on December 29, 2025, while travelling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV on Nigeria’s Lagos, Ibadan Expressway. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck during an overtaking manoeuvre.

Two members of his team, trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami, were killed in the crash. Joshua suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for precautionary checks before being discharged in stable condition later the same day.

Career uncertainty and speculation
The accident occurred during a pivotal stretch in Joshua’s career. Only weeks earlier, he had competed in a high profile bout and was being linked with potential fights in 2026, including a crossover contest with kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven and a possible all British showdown with Tyson Fury.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, speculation grew over whether Joshua might step away from boxing altogether. The recent training footage has eased some of those doubts, even though no official announcements have been made regarding his future plans.

A career defined by milestones
Joshua remains one of the most accomplished figures in British boxing history. He won silver at the World Amateur Championships, captured Olympic gold at the London Games in 2012, and later became a two time world heavyweight champion as a professional.

Victories over fighters such as Wladimir Klitschko, Joseph Parker and Francis Ngannou established him as a central figure in the modern heavyweight era and helped drive a resurgence of mainstream interest in the division.

Grief, faith and recovery
In a social media statement released after the accident, Joshua addressed the loss of his teammates and the support he received in its aftermath. “Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers,” he wrote. He added that while the situation was painful for him, it was even harder for the families who lost their sons, before closing with a message of faith and remembrance.

Rather than framing his return to training as a comeback, the footage presents it as a personal process. For now, Joshua’s presence in the gym appears less about future fights and more about finding balance after profound loss.
