30 Persons Feared Dead In Renewed Fulani, Kamuku Communal Feud

Over 30 persons have been reportedly killed, several others hiding inside nearby bushes as renewed hostilities over farmlands between the Kamuku and Fulani herders intensifies.

Niger State Police Command had told journalists on Wednesday that only 2 people died in the aftermath of clash between Fulani herders and Kamuku farmers around Tegina in Rafi Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger state.

But findings indicated that, the Tegina road linking Kebbi State as at Thursday morning is said to have become death trap as charred bodies of persons killed and set ablaze litter the highway.

Sources from the area indicates that casualties of the feud over land are not only the Kamuku and Fulani tribes, but settlers and travellers including those on transit became victims as they were caught up while on transit.

Press statement from the office of the Public Relations unit, Niger state police Command, dated, 1/7/2026 confirmed that not only two but several people actually lost their lives in the communal clash.

According to the statement, “At about 10pm report received indicated that 15 persons were reportedly burnt to death in a two-bedroom flat at Angwan-Baago via Godoro village, while one other person was also killed at another location, bringing the number of deaths to 18.

“Reconciliation committee headed by local government council officials are working with security agencies towards addressing the crisis,” the police statement however pointed out.

The statement from the Commands’ Public Relations unit further hinted that, “Joint Police and military patrols have been deployed to the area to restore peace”.

Meanwhile, contrary to police claims, over 30 people were reportedly burnt to ashes and several others receiving treatment in hospital from injuries sustained during the attacks.

A yet to be ascertained number of persons are hiding inside nearby bushes to avoid being killed by the Fulani and Kamuku or being caught in the cross fire between the two warring groups in Tegina, which is part of Kagara Emirate in Rafi LGA.

One of the residents, Isah Tanko Tegina told some journalists on phone that, Kamuku being one of the indigenous tribes in Tegina are left to their faith, annihilated by the Fulani pastoralists while federal, state, local government and traditional institution are watching.

lsah expressing sympathy to families of those that lost their lives and properties and wishing the injured very quick recovery is calling on government to act fast and end further hostilities.
