In a condolence statement on Sunday, Dr Adesina who is also the Chairman of AXA Mansard Insurance Plc described Wigwe as “an erudite banker, businessman, and philanthropist, noting that his demise was a huge loss to the entire country.

The statement reads in full:

Our dear brother,

We received with a heavy heart of your abrupt departure from this world with your wonderful wife and lovely son.

This is a huge loss not only to the Wigwe family but the entire country as you have been an erudite banker, businessman, and philanthropist.

You provided solid financial advice and support to different sectors, especially the power sector, helping indigenous companies like ours traverse the murky landscape of the economy.

After decades of success in the business world, you have started a legacy of knowledge transfer through The Wigwe University, a testament to the great man that you were.

My partners and I in the Sahara Group will greatly miss spending time with you, discussing risk management and different strategies that will steer our great country in the right direction.

Our deepest condolences to your daughter and the entire Wigwe family, the people of Rivers State, the Access Bank family, and other institutions and businesses you have made your mark. May God grant all those who are connected with you the strength to go through this difficult period.

Rest in perfect peace, Herbert, Chizoba, and Chizi Wigwe.
