Yeni Kuti, the eldest daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has weighed in on the ongoing debate involving Wizkid and her brother Seun Kuti, calling for fairness, truth, and an end to what she described as false narratives.
According to Yeni Kuti, Wizkid has consistently shown deep respect and homage to Fela over the years, especially through his actions rather than words. She revealed that Wizkid has performed at the New Afrika Shrine several times free of charge, purely to honor Fela and give back to the youth.
She recalled a particular moment years ago when Wizkid personally reached out to her, expressing his desire to perform a free show for young people at the Fela Shrine. Yeni said the entire Kuti family was surprised because Wizkid did not request transportation, logistics, or any form of payment.
“He simply showed up and performed,” she explained, adding that the show turned out to be one of the best performances ever held at the Shrine. Since then, Wizkid has reportedly returned multiple times to perform free shows in honor of Fela—without publicity or bragging.
Yeni emphasized that whether people love or dislike Wizkid, it is unfair to deny the fact that he has paid his respects in meaningful ways. She strongly rejected claims that Wizkid ever insulted Fela or tried to diminish his legacy, describing such accusations as untrue and based on rumors.
According to her, it is unreasonable for anyone to publicly question or undermine Wizkid’s achievements using statements he never made, and then expect him to remain completely silent. She stressed that Wizkid has earned his place in music history through hard work and has never shown disrespect toward Fela.
Yeni Kuti concluded by expressing disappointment that unnecessary comparisons and narratives are being pushed, stating clearly that honoring Fela does not require tearing down another artist. She urged for calm, honesty, and mutual respect, reminding everyone that legacy should be preserved through truth, not controversy.
