The newly sworn-in Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated a committee to propose a framework for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
This initiative is part of ongoing discussions on policing reforms, with President Bola Tinubu urging constitutional amendments to accommodate the proposed decentralised policing structure.
The committee’s task includes reviewing existing policing models, assessing community security needs, and proposing an operational framework for state police structures.
Disu emphasized that state police formation could provide localized policing services focused on community safety, conflict prevention, and early response to emerging threats.
