The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced that it is investigating the United Airlines incident in Nigeria.

In a post on X on Tuesday, the NTSB stated that the United Airlines Boeing 787-8, en route from Lagos to Washington Dulles International Airport, experienced a sudden movement that resulted in injuries to both passengers and cabin crew.

“The incident occurred as the airplane was flying in Côte d’Ivoire airspace. The Bureau Enquêtes et Analyses of Côte d’Ivoire delegated the investigation to the NTSB,” the post reads.

The board stated that a preliminary report is expected to be published on its website in about 30 days.

On Friday, United Airlines referred to the incident as a “technical issue” and clarified that the flight was not affected by severe turbulence.

“We are working with aviation authorities in the U.S. and Nigeria to understand the cause,” United said.

Recall that on January 23, United Airlines flight UA613 made an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers, eight attendants, and three pilots.

Reacting to the incident on January 24, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) reported that four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members suffered minor injuries.
