Think Before You Post: A Wake-Up Call for Bloggers and Social Media Users, By Wole Arisekola

Spread the love

In today’s digital age, drama may get you clicks—but it can also get you locked up. Before you hit “post,” ask yourself: is it worth a prison sentence?

Let’s be clear: lawyers are not your friends. Even your closest buddy will ask for “transport money” before stepping into a courtroom for you. So, don’t rely on friendship when the law comes knocking.

Spread positivity. Write responsibly. Not every trending topic is worth your voice. Many so-called bloggers have confused clout-chasing with journalism. But here’s a reminder: real journalists know the rules—and we know each other. We belong to associations. We understand the ethics of the trade.

Unfortunately, many bloggers now find themselves in custody—detained by the police, DSS, or DMI—with no legal help in sight. No support, no defense. Why? Because they ignored the basics.

If you’re serious about blogging or digital media, register your business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). Set up an office, even if it’s modest. A registered company can protect you legally—only your business can be sued, not you personally.

I just helped secure bail for a blogger who spent nearly three years in prison because he couldn’t meet the conditions. Three years, wasted—because of one careless post.

So here’s the truth: posting nonsense on social media can land you in jail. Stop chasing clout. Start using your platform wisely.
