Standing in the Gap: A Lifelong Commitment to Nigeria First Takes Center Stage in Washington, Segun Showunmi

The gentleman at the center of the photograph is Congressman Riley Moore, one of the key members of Congress currently engaged on issues concerning Nigeria. I participated in a private policy conversation with him and several respected senior American lawmakers and diplomats including the distinguished Frank Wolf (83), Congressman Chris Smith, and Ambassador Robert Destro.

These are individuals with long-standing reputations in human rights, religious freedom, and governance issues. Their concern for Nigeria is real, serious, and deeply informed.

There is much that can be said about the discussions, but what matters most is this:
every step I take in these engagements is guided by a lifelong commitment to the principle of Nigeria First.

I do not go abroad to trade blame, inflame tensions, or distort narratives.
I go to create understanding, open channels, clarify misinformation, and ensure that Nigeria’s story the real story is told with dignity, accuracy, and seriousness.

My work has always been done with the full consciousness that a nation’s future is shaped not only at home but also in how it is understood abroad. And I will continue to stand in the gap wherever necessary, because Nigeria deserves advocates who put the country above tribe, above politics, and above self.
