A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former gubernatorial aspirant in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has called on Nigerian children to embrace their identity, remain focused, and see themselves as custodians of Africa’s rich cultural heritage.

In a stirring message to commemorate Children’s Day, Showunmi urged young Nigerians to rise above distractions and commit to values that build character and strengthen the fabric of society.

“I see the early signs that the future will be bright,” he said. “Children of Nigeria, the African race looks up to you to tell our amazing story — of struggle, of determination, and of triumph.”

He warned that the current social environment is filled with distractions capable of derailing young minds, stressing the importance of discipline and clarity of purpose.

“The noise is much, but focus is key,” Showunmi noted. “Many a distraction gets in the way of your young minds. Apply yourselves to things that edify.”

The PDP stalwart also emphasized the importance of preserving and modernizing African traditions, encouraging children not to view culture as static, but as a living system that must evolve for survival and relevance.

“You must hold on to the unique African culture and our traditions, for they have been passed down from generation to generation to define who we are,” he stated.

“Open your souls to incremental improvements that aid your survival and thriving — as individuals and as a collective. The idea must be: I am because you are. That way, you will be your brother and sister’s keeper.”

He concluded the message with words of blessing and optimism, expressing hope for the future and encouraging children to enjoy their special day.

“May the owner of life be with you as you strive. I see the signs of a glorious future emerging. Have fun on the one day dedicated to you — our future.”

Children’s Day is celebrated annually on May 27 to honour and promote the welfare of children across the country.
