Otunba Segun Showunmi, convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), a platform aimed at fostering grassroots consensus for the selection of future leaders has celebrated former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as he clocks 68, with Showunmi describing him as “an extraordinary statesman” whose conduct since leaving office has continued to strengthen Nigeria’s institutions.
In a statement personally signed by the convener of “The Alternative” he said he could recall how things looked 10 years ago after the Bayelsa-born former President was in office, noting that he was confident that the roles he now play both within Nigeria and in the subregion would require a different kind of leadership.

Happy Birthday to an extraordinary statesman. It is remarkable to reflect on how time truly makes all things beautiful. I recall how things looked 10 years ago after you left the office of the President, and I was confident that the roles you now play both within Nigeria and in the subregion would require a different kind of leadership.
Now more than ever, your strategic support is needed for the country. The business of service should not be limited to the holding of high office alone; I encourage you to dedicate even greater effort to the responsibilities of the elevated office of statesmanship.
This nation has given you much, and it will be right to give back even more. Our country must strive to unite, embrace patriotism, and, above all, maintain peace.
As you celebrate, I wish you good health, enduring joy, and continued purpose. Be a citizen of the world, but always a steadfast patron of Nigeria.
