The last has not been heard about gale of defection of members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State as a former member of the House of Representatives from Ife Federal constituency, Hon. Rotimi Makinde urged the leadership of the party to be circumspect.
It is recalled that the defection literally generated series of reactions and discussions among party members and supporters. The Osun APC also expressed concern over the situation just as the situation sparked debates and tensions, with both parties vying for the attention and support of the Osun people.
In a statement released recently by the former parliamentarian and a chieftain of South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA’23) he queried mass migration of politicians who are jumping ship adding that not many of them did so out of ideological conviction, but out of convenience, desperation, or the lust for political survival.
While lending his voice further to the current political development in the State, Makinde also used his opportunity to reaffirm his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Makinde statement reads in full:
“The recent wave of defectors from the PDP to the APC in Osun State appears less a matter of ideological alignment and more a survival strategy, driven by self-interest. Much like the historic INALENDE in Ibadan, they seek shelter in times of political turbulence. The allure of power, resources, and influence is undeniable, but whether this transactional shift will foster genuine loyalty or merely perpetuate a cycle of opportunism remains to be seen. The future narrative of the APC in Osun now hangs in the balance, as ambition, power dynamics, and legacy intertwine.
“As a ranking member of the party, I have stood firm in its defense even in the most challenging times—when the stakes were high, and even personal safety was at risk.My record, commitment to Ile Ile and political pedigree and unwavering support for Mr president ,our party both at the state and the federal is unquestionably.
“Today, however, the political landscape seems increasingly driven by financial considerations. Let it be on record that I have offered myself in service. It is now incumbent upon the party’s leadership to align not just with wealth, but with steadfastness and integrity.
“I am in suspense to know where Ile Ife’s interest stands on this, and where lies the reward in steadfastness of myself and Senator Barrister Babajide Omoworare who had been holding fort for the progressive party in our desperation to change the narrative in our dear community and state….”
