President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chief Israel Ogbue, who died at the age of 99.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the President commiserated with the family, friends, and associates of the late elder statesman, describing his death as the loss of a distinguished public servant and accomplished corporate leader.

Chief Ogbue had a long and notable career spanning the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation (NICON), and NAL Merchant Bank before his foray into boardroom leadership at UBA.

He served as a non-executive director of the bank from 2005 until 2011, when he was appointed Chairman, a position he held until 2013.

President Tinubu noted that during his tenure on the board, Chief Ogbue demonstrated dignity, strategic foresight, and steady, principled leadership at a pivotal period in the bank’s transformation and consolidation.

The late patriarch was also the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu, the wife of UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

The President extended his condolences to the Elumelu family and other extended family members over the loss, while also sympathising with UBA’s Board, management, and staff.

According to the statement, President Tinubu acknowledged the numerous tributes pouring in to celebrate Chief Ogbue’s exemplary life, marked by humility, integrity, and devotion to service.

He described the late banker as a committed Christian and family man who dedicated his time, resources, and experience to serving the church, the poor, the vulnerable, and his community.

“His life was a testament to quiet strength, discipline, and service to humanity,” the President was quoted as saying.

President Tinubu prayed that Almighty God would grant eternal rest to the departed patriarch and comfort to his family and loved ones.
